1965 - 10-1-0 Final Rankings: AP- 5 UPI (pre-bowl)-3
The Huskers turned in their first undefeated regular season in the modern era and had a shot at the National Championship in the bowl game, only to see Alabama claim the prize. The Huskers entered the season as the number one ranked team, a first for any Nebraska team. The 1965 Husker offense averaged almost 32 points a game while the defense held opponents to an average of 11 points.
1966 - 9-2-0 Final Rankings: AP- 6 UPI (pre-bowl)-7The 1966 Huskers tore through their schedule for nine straight wins before falling to Oklahoma by one point in the season finale. For the second straight time the Huskers spent the entire season ranked in the Top 10. The Huskers post-season frustration with the Alabama Crimson Tide continued as 'Bama defeated Nebraska for a second year in a row.
1967 - 6-4-0 Final Rankings: None
The "Summer of Love" soon became the Huskers' "winter of their discontent". For the first time in 40 games the Husker lost a regular season game to a team other than Oklahoma when Kansas handed NU their first shutout under Bob Devaney in the fourth game of the season. The Huskers went on to lose three more times despite chalking up four shutout victories.
1968 - 6-4-0 Final Rankings: NoneThe Huskers opened the season with high hopes and a Top 20 ranking. It all fell apart midway through the year with losses to Kansas and Missouri. Two more losses later in the season kept the Huskers out of post-season play for the second straight year.
1969 - 9-2-0 Final Rankings: AP- 11 UPI (pre-bowl)-12The Huskers started the year slowly, but rolled off seven straight wins, including a Sun Bowl victory to turn in an impressive 9-2 record and a number 11 ranking. The Huskers only losses on the year came against Top 10 ranked USC and Missouri.
1970 - 11-0-1 Final Rankings: AP- 1 UPI (pre-bowl)-3 Husker fans' hopes finally came to reality in 1970 as the Husker powered their way to an undefeated season and the school's first ever National Championship. A 21-21 tie to third ranked USC was the only blemish on the sterling season. The Huskers were never ranked lower than ninth in the polls all season long. They took a number three ranking into the Orange Bowl and, thanks to losses to the number one and two ranked teams earlier in the day, defeated LSU for the crown.
1971 - 13-0-0 Final Rankings: AP-1 UPI (pre-bowl)-1One of the greatest, if not the greatest, Husker teams of all-time. Bob Devaney's powerhouse rolled over and through every opponent building up to a classic season ending battle with arch-rival Oklahoma in the "Game of the Century" The Huskers then went on to a decisive Orange Bowl victory over Bear Bryant's Alabama squad to capture their second straight National Championship.
1972 - 9-2-1 Final Rankings: AP-4 UPI-9Looking to follow up on back-to-back National Championship season, the Huskers' hopes for a third crown were quickly dashed by a loss to a fired-up UCLA team. Undeterred, the Huskers battled back for seven straight wins and climbed back to number three in the rankings. A late season tie with Iowa State and a frustrating loss to rival Oklahoma sent Nebraska into the Orange Bowl ranked number nine and facing Notre Dame. Determined to send retiring head coach Bob Devaney out in style, the Huskers demolished the Irish 40-6.
1973 - 9-2-1 Final Rankings: AP-7 UPI-11New head coach Tom Osborne kicked off his reign with a revenge win over UCLA to open the season. Wins over North Carolina State, Kansas and Colorado punctuated a season that earned the Huskers a trip to the Cotton Bowl. Osborne was triumphant in his first bowl game as head coach with a 19-3 win over Texas.
1974 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-9 UPI-8The early part of the 1974 season was either feast or famine for the Huskers. The Huskers won four of their first six games by a combined score of 220-7, but also fell victim to two unranked teams. The Huskers rebounded with four more wins and climbed backed to number six in the rankings before falling to the number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the season finale. The Huskers wrapped up the year with an impressive win over a strong Florida team in the Sugar Bowl.
1975 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-9 UPI-9The Husker stormed their way through most of the 1975 season in hopes of returning to the National Championship picture. Ten straight wins set up the battle between the second ranked Huskers and the seventh ranked Oklahoma Sooners for the season finale. OU prevailed 35-10, forcing the Huskers to settle for a tie for the Big 8 Championship and a date in the Fiesta Bowl. The Huskers were unable to rebound against a feisty Arizona State team and suffered a heartbreaking 17-14 loss.
1976 - 9-3-1 Final Rankings: AP-9 UPI-7The Huskers entered the season ranked number one in the nation for only the second time in their history. The honor didn't last long as Louisiana State frustrated the Huskers with a season opening 6-6 tie sent the Huskers rolling down in the polls. Nebraska put together seven wins but ended up losing two of their last three games and three overall to drop them into a fourth place tie in the Big 12. The Huskers still earned a bowl date and made the most of it with a 27-24 victory over Texas Tech in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl.
1977 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-12 UPI-10Nebraska pulled off victories over Top 10 opponents Alabama and Colorado, but saw a season bookending losses to Washington State in the opener and Oklahoma in the finale and a mid season set back to Iowa State put a damper on the year. Nebraska earned a trip to the Liberty Bowl where they staged a dramatic come from behind victory over North Carolina.
1978 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-8 UPI-8For the first time in their history Nebraska got two chances at unseating a number one ranked team. They were successful in their second attempt but it was not enough to offset a frustrating year with a bizarre ending. The Huskers lost to #1 Alabama in the season opener, then ran the table before defeating the #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners for the first time in Tom Osborne's career. A loss to Missouri the following week set up an unprecedented rematch with Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.
1979 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-9 UPI-7Nebraska rolled through their first ten games, shutting out opponents in three straight games. The Huskers rose to as high as number three in the nation but lost a heart breaking game to Oklahoma in the season ender. A disappointing lost to Houston in the Cotton Bowl finished the year.
1980 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-7 UPI-7The Huskers suffered a rare home loss to Florida State, but big wins over Penn State and Missouri raised the Huskers as high as number four in the polls. The Huskers made a trip to the Sun Bowl and turned in an impressive 31-17 win over Mississippi State in the classic.
1981 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-11 UPI-9Two early season losses to Iowa and Penn State didn't slow the Huskers down as they rebounded to win the Big Eight Championship. Thanks to a strange turn of events the number four ranked Huskers had a shot at the National Championship in the Orange Bowl, but a determined Clemson team turned away those hopes.
1982 - 12-1-0 Final Rankings: AP-3 UPI-3Only a controversial three point loss to Penn State marred the Huskers 1982 season. They rolled over a dozen opponents including Auburn, Oklahoma and LSU in the Orange Bowl. Nebraska claimed the Big Eight Championship for the second straight year.
1983 - 12-1-0 Final Rankings: AP-2 UPI-2One of the most powerful college football teams ever assembled came within a fingertip of the National Championship. Featuring Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier, the Huskers started the season ranked number one and stayed their until the last possible moment. The Huskers were never really threatened all season long until they faced Miami in the Orange Bowl. A dramatic last second shot at a win fell just short dropping the Huskers' 1982 team from immortality to mere greatness.
1984 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-4 UPI-3Nebraska spent three weeks at number one early in the season thanks to impressive wins over Wyoming, Minnesota and UCLA. An upset loss to Syracuse pushed the Huskers back. Six straight wins after that were enough to earn Nebraska a trip to the Sugar Bowl where they defeated LSU.
1985 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-11 UPI-10The Huskers rolled off nine straight wins, including a 34-24 win over fifth ranked Oklahoma State, between two regular season losses to earn a Fiesta Bowl trip. Jim Skow and Danny Noonan anchored a fiery Husker team.
1986 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-5 UPI-4Big wins over Florida State and South Carolina highlighted the Huskers' 1986 season. Playing in their first home night game ever the Big Red downed FSU 34-17. They capped their year with a 30-15 win over LSU in the Sugar Bowl.
1987 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-6 UPI-6Nebraska rolled off nine straight wins to climb to number one in the rankings and set up a dramatic 1 vs. 2 matchup with Oklahoma. Wins over third ranked UCLA and Top 20 residents Arizona State and Oklahoma State highlighted the year.
1988 - 11-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-10 UPI-10Wins over four ranked teams showed the Huskers might in 1988. Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Colorado and Oklahoma all fell to Nebraska as the Huskers secured another Big Eight Championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl.
1989 - 10-2-0 Final Rankings: AP-11 UPI-12Eight straight victories to open the season, in which they didn't score less than 35 points in a game, set the Huskers up for a big conference showdown against second ranked Colorado. The Huskers faced old foe Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl to cap the year.
1990 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-24 UPI-17tNebraska powered their way throughout the early part of the year, but a late season stumble dropped the Huskers out of the final Top 20 rankings for the first time since 1968. Nebraska won eight straight games and climbed up to number four in the polls. Losses to Oklahoma and eventual co-National Champions Colorado and Georgia Tech ended the year on a sour note.
1991 - 9-2-1 Final Rankings: AP-15 CNN/USA Today-15For the second straight year Nebraska lost two games to the eventual co-National Champions. Washington and Miami each claimed victories over the Huskers and went on to share the crown. Nebraska scored big wins over Oklahoma, Arizona State and a dramatic tie with Colorado.
1992 - 9-3-0 Final Rankings: AP-14 CNN/USA Today -14Nebraska overcame a stunning upset by Iowa State to claim the Big Eight championship and a Orange Bowl trip. Freshman sensation Tommie Frazier made his debut. The Huskers turned in one for the ages as they crushed eighth ranked Colorado 52-7 on Halloween night. For the first time ever the Huskers played a game on foreign soil as they met Kansas State in Tokyo, Japan.
1993 - 11-1-0 Final Rankings: AP-3 CNN/USA Today-3In a sign of things to come, the Huskers pounded their way to an undefeated season and came whisker close to winning the National Championship. Nebraska proved the experts wrong as they battled Florida State in the Orange Bowl until literally the final second. The season set the mood for the Huskers next two years.
1994 - 13-0-0 Final Rankings: AP-1 CNN/USA Today-1Overcoming adversity the Huskers kept their focus and became the first team ever to record a second 13-0 season. Wins over ranked teams such as West Virginia, UCLA, Kansas State and Colorado showed what Nebraska could do. Behind three different starting quarterbacks, including a former walk-on, the Huskers rolled through the regular season. A dramatic and impressive victory over Miami in the Orange Bowl earned Husker coach Tom Osborne his first National Championship.
1995 - 12-0-0 Final Rankings: AP-1 CNN/USA Today-1Many observers have proclaimed the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers as the greatest team of all time. The Huskers were never seriously challenged all season long as quarterback Tommie Frazier lead an offense that was never held to under 35 points in the season. Five times the Huskers scored over fifty points. What was supposed to be a spectacular battle between the top ranked Huskers and the second ranked Florida Gators in the Fiesta Bowl turned into a laugher as the Huskers claimed an undisputed second straight National Championship..
