The Nebraska Cornhuskers got their first chance to examine their latest recruiting class on Saturday as the incoming freshman class underwent performance testing inside Cook Pavilion.
"As a group these recruits are a very lean, muscular, explosive and talented bunch of athletes." said Boyd Epley, Director of Athletic Performance. "They were really impressive considering the fact that some of these tests are new to them."
One player who caught Epley's eye was defensive back Willie Amos from Sweetwater, Texas. A hamstring injury prevented Amos from testing in either the 10-yard or 40-yard dash, but his score in the Pro Agility test was higher than any freshman score. The 6-0, 182 pounder ran the Pro Agility test in 3.82 seconds. Players' times are calculated against their position and size to create a point total. Amos' Pro Agility was a chart topping 730 points. Amos also topped all freshman with a 34' vertical jump.
"We've never seen a score like his before." said Epley.
Other players who performed well were wide receiver Ben Zajicek (5-11, 202), and linebackers T.J. Hollowell (6-0, 216) and Lanny Hopkins.(6-2, 186). Zajicek turned in a class best 10-yard dash of 1.60 seconds and the day's top point total with 2311. He had the second best 40-yard dash with 4.65. Hollowell was second in the 10-yard dash (1.66), third in the 40-yard dash (4.67) and second in overall points (2191). Hopkins was third in the 10-yard dash (1.67) and had the best 40-yard time (4.58)
Epley said the test results for incoming freshman are looked at different by the coaches because the are the first such results the coaches have. "There really is a learning curve for these players." Epley said. "They will test better once they get used to how the testing is done."
Defensive back Lornell McPherson and offensive lienman M.J. Flaum were held out of testing due to medical reasons. Flaum will be undergoing reconstructive shoulder surgery and will not be joining the team this fall.
"Flaum was suppose to be on the field with us today, but after examining his shoulder close enough our medical staff decided it would be best to go in a do a scope." said head coach Frank Solich. "Upon doing the scope they went ahead and did a reconstruction. So M.J. will be out for approximately six months."
The freshman class will take Sunday off and return to the field on Monday. The returning varsity players will check in for orientation on Tuesday and undergo their testing on Wednesday.
