Scrimmage Gives Husker Offense A Chance To Shine

Long PLays Fill Scrimmage Scoresheet

by Mark Fricke
August 25, 2000

The final Nebraska Cornhusker scrimmage of the fall was football's equivalent of a hot knife through soft butter as the Nebraska offense faced off against the scout team and cake-walked to eleven touchdowns.

The scoring sheet looked like a highlight reel with six touchdowns of 40 yards or more, including three TD plays of 65-yards. I-Backs Correll Buckhalter and Dahrran Diedrick each sprinted 65 yards for scores, while Bobby Newcombe hauled in an Eric Crouch pass for a 65 yard score of his own. Dan Alexander was close to matching the effort but his touchdown run was a mere 64-yards. Crouch added a 56-yard TD strike to Matt Davison.

But don't think the Husker offense was the only squad feasting on scout team scrimmage appetizers. The Husker defense had long scoring plays of their own. Cornerback Erwin Swiney returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown, and rover Taylor Gehman picked up a fumble and returned it 42 yards for a score.

Husker coach Frank Solich hopes the results of the scrimmage were a sign of the balance of power on his team. "Hopefully the number of early touchdowns was more because of how strong our offense is and not because of sloppy play by our scout team defense." Solich said. "We were more consistent and executed better today than we did last week on both sides of the ball. The defense played very well at times. Then there were times that we went into a lapse and weren't very effective."

Alexander was the top rusher in the scrimmage with 126 yards on six carries. Correll Buckhalter added 92 yards with his three carries.

Quarterback Eric Crouch completed nine of his 15 pass attempts for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried seven times for 58 yards. Backup signal caller Jammal Lord carried the ball six times for minus-4 yards. He completed all three of his passes for 64 yards.

The Huskers suffered another injury to an already hard-hit defensive line. Nose Tackle Jon Clanton suffered an ankle sprain in the scrimmage. The severity of the injury is nor yet known.

"(Clanton's injury) could really effect us if he misses a few days, because of our lack of depth at that position." said Solich. Recently, Husker defensive tackle Loran Kaiser underwent an emergency appendectomy. Nose Tackles Jason Lohr (toe) and Ryon Bingham (broken foot) are already sidelined during fall drills.

I-Back Thunder Collins suffered a bruised right shin during the scrimmage.

The Huskers open the season next Saturday against San Jose State. Live game video will be available over the internet at foxsports.com
