In the storied history between Nebraska and Oklahoma, great plays have defined the outcome. Things were no different Saturday when the second ranked Huskers battled the top ranked Sooners and emerged with a thrilling 20-10 victory.
Husker quarterback Eric Crouch scored on a 63-yard trick play in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.
With 6:10 left in the game and the Huskers sitting at their own 37, Crouch handed off to I-Back Thunder Collins for an apparent end rush to the right. Collins pitched the ball to Mike Stuntz, a true freshman receiver who was a left handed quarterback in high school, headed in the other direction. Stuntz then lofted a perfect pass to a streaking Crouch, who caught it in stride and out-raced the defense for the score.
"It was something we worked on (in practice) all week, and we thought it would go over well." said Crouch. "This was one of those games where you want some excitement, so we thought we'd come out and try it, and it worked."
Crouch finished the game with only 21 yards rushing. He did pass for 102 yards by completing 10 of 18 passes.
I-Back Dahrran Diedrick ran for 90 yards on 23 carries to lead the Huskers in rushing. Diedrick provided the Huskers other touchdown on a 2-yard run with 5:58 left in the second period.
The Huskers finished the game with 164 yards on the ground and 165 yards passing. Josh Brown booted two field goals from 27 and 26 yards.
While the Husker offense might have been slowed, the Huskers' "Blackshirt" defense provided more than enough to neutralize the Sooners.
"Everyone just played a heck of a game," said rush end Chris Kelsay.
Oklahoma amassed 339 offensive yards and 21 first downs, but the defense provided big plays with two interceptions and 3 sacks.
The loss snapped Oklahoma's 20-game winning streak.
The decisive drive included several key plays. After starting at their own 4 yard line, Nebraska moved the ball thanks to a third-down 19 yard run by Crouch to get them out of the shadow of the end zone. Later in the drive Oklahoma was called for a face-mask penalty on a third down play that gave NU a first down and kept the drive alive.
Josh Brown kicked two field goals for the Huskers.
Oklahoma's Nate Hybl was 17-for-36 for 184 yards in relief of starter Jason White, who was knocked out of the game early in the second quarter when he came down awkwardly on his left knee after completing a pass.
Hybl, the Sooners' starter for the first six games, threw a 4-yard pass to Trent Smith in the second quarter for Oklahoma's only touchdown.
The win will likely move the Huskers up to number one when the newest BCS poll comes out Monday, and gives them the inside track for the conference title.
"I think it puts us in the driver's seat, at least for the Big 12 title." said Husker offensive lineman Dave Volk. "We're still on the road to what we want to accomplish, but we have to stay focused. Every team is going to be gunning for us."
