Any fears that the Nebraska Cornhuskers would suffer a let down after their huge victory over Oklahoma one week before were left on the Memorial Stadium turf in Lawrence, Kansas as the Huskers rolled over the Kansas Jayhawks 51-7.
The win was the Huskers' 33rd straight over Kansas and their 10th win of the year. Nebraska has now won 10 or more games in 8 of the last nine seasons.
The Kansas offense was held in check almost all game long. In the first half they saw more yards gained because of Husker penalties (15) than by their offense (6 yards). They finished the game with 67 yards of total offense. Their only scoring drive of the game came in the fourth quarter against the reserves and netted 80 yards.
Nebraska's offense started slow, being held scoreless in the first period. They eventually exploded for 20 points in the second period and 31 in the fourth.
The Huskers finished with 284 yards rushing against a Kansas defense that ranked 109th in the nation in stopping the run.
Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch rushed 13 times for 49 yards and one touchdown. He passed for 164 yards by completing 14 of 24 attempts.
I-Back Dahrran Diedrick lead the rushing attack with 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. Diedrick scored on runs of 10 and 38 yards, pushing his season rushing total to 1,097.
The Husker special teams got in on the action as well when Ben Cornelsen scored on a 71-yard touchdown run in the fourth to put Nebraska up 37-0 with 12:19 left in the game. Husker kicker Josh Brown booted three field goals.
Nebraska's first score came on the second play of the second period. Diedrick went in from 10 yards out to cap a 59-yard drive.
The Huskers struck quickly again later in the period. A 50-yard punt return by Keyuo Craver set up the Huskers on the Kansas 21 midway through the second quarter. Thunder Collins scored on the next play to put NU up 17-0.
Brown kicked a 43 yard field goal, his second of the game, as time ran out in the half to put Kansas down 20-0 at the break.
Kansas' only score came on Zach Dyer's 4-yard pass to Adrian Jones, with 5:50 left. Nebraska responded a few minutes later when backup quarterback Jammal Lord made it 51-7 with a 33-yard TD run.
