Early mistakes and a Miami offense that was able to almost score at will, crushed the Nebraska Cornhuskers hopes of their sixth national title.
The Miami victory cleared up any doubt as to who would claim the number one spot, finishing a perfect 12-0 campaign with a 37-14 Rose Bowl win. Nebraska falls to 11-2 after losing their final two games by a combined score of 99-50.
Miami scored 27 points in the second period alone. Nebraska's powerful rushing offense was stuffed by Miami, and then added fuel to the fire with two fumbles and an interception.
Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey completed 22 of 35 passes for362 yards. Andre Johnson was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 200 yards.
Nebraska's Eric Crouch rushed for 114 and completed 5 of 15 passes for 62 yards.
Nebraska was able to put together two scoring drives in the second half. Fullback Judd Davies capped a 68 yard drive with a 16 yard touchdown run.
Nebraska's biggest thrill came on the second play of the fourth quarter when DeJuan Groce fielded a Miami punt at the 27, broke a tackle and raced 72 yards for a touchdown to make the score 34-14.
But they were unable to overcome the turnovers from earlier in the game.
Nebraska's second fumble of the game came near mid field midway through the first period was followed one play later by Miami's first score, a 49 yard toss from Dorsey to Johnson. Cornerback Keyou Craver fell down on the coverage leaving Johnson all alone on the route.
When the second quarter opened up, so did the Miami offense. Just 27 seconds into the stanza Portis broke several tackles on a 19 yard touchdown run. Nebraska imploded again on their next drive with a pass interception that James Lewis returned for a touchdown making the score 21-0 just three minutes into the second period.
Miami did not let up. Their next drive was a two play affair covering 56 yards. A 45 yard completion to Johnson was followed up with a 21 yard touchdown strike to tight end Jeremy Shockey.
The Hurricanes added one more score before the break to go up 34-0 at the half. Miami scored on their three possession in the second period.
Miami had 321 yards of total offense in the first half, 260 of those coming through the air. Nebraska was held to 119 yards.
Things settled down a bit for the Husker defense in the second half. A 37 yard field goal by Todd Sievers field goal with 10:04 to go made the score 37-14.
Miami's defense proved too much for the Nebraska offense. Nebraska entered the game averaging 315 yards per game. In the Rose Bowl they produced just 258.
A crowd of 93,781 filled the Rose Bowl, most of them Husker fans. The crowd marked the largest ever to watch a Husker game, eclipsing the previous mark set in the Rose Bowl back in 1941 when 92,000 attended.
