Spring Game Shines Spotlight On Backup Quarterbacks

Dukes, Stuntz Battle For Sub

by Mark Fricke
April 21, 2002

The annual red/white football game at the University of Nebraska gave fans a chance to see what the next season may hold, and many came away liking what they saw.

The biggest issue on everyone’s minds was who would step up to replace star players like Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and offensive lineman Toniu Fonoti. Both of those players were selected in the first day of the NFL draft.

The starting quarterback question has some answers already in place. Jammal Lord will enter fall as the team’s undisputed starting quarterack. The more active question is who will be his backup. To that end, Lord played just two series before freshman recruit Curt Dukes and Sophomore Mike Stuntz alternated with the top offensive unit for most of the final three quarters as the Red team beat the White 17-7.

Head coach Frank Solich says the two players are neck and neck when it comes to claiming the number two spot at quarterback.

"They've got to be close to ready because (the season) just around the corner," Solich said. "They've come a long ways, but there is a long ways to go."

Stuntz was 3-for-7 for 35 yards with a couple of fumbles and was sacked twice. He also helped guide the No. 2 offense on a 77-yard touchdown drive on the opening series of the second half, highlighted by his 18-yard run on a third-and-7.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Dukes completed 5-of-7 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown and ran five times for 10 yards Saturday.

In the spring game on Saturday, the game was scoreless until late in the second period when Josh Brown connected on a 36-yard field goal for the Red squad.

The Red team widened their lead after Ira Cooper blocked a punt to set up an easy, 16-yard touchdown drive for the Red, sending them to halftime with a 10-0 lead.

The White team finally scored on a short run by redshirt freshman Marques Simmons. Simmins gained 76 of the White team's 77 yards on the seven-play drive.

The Red struck back when I-back Diedrick, set up another Red team score with a 54 yard run to the White 20-yard line. Seven plays later, Dukes found split end Wilson Thomas in the front corner of the end zone.

Diedrick led all rushers with 100 yards on 12 carries. Simmons finished with 88 yards on 12 carries.  end of article dingbat
