The Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive coaches put things into the hands of their Blackshirts leaders during a late week players only meeting and the players responded with a dominating performance against Missouri on Saturday.
During their Friday team meeting Husker Defensive Coordinator Craig Bohl gave his two defensive captains, DeJuan Groce and Chris Kelsay, their marching orders.
"I told them it was their defense and to take over the meeting," Bohl said.
Bohl instructed the players to come up with three goals they wanted to achieve against Missouri and When the coaches returned the players had three objective identified; allow no more than 13 points, limit the Tigers to less that 100 yards rushing and give up no more than 250 yards of total offense.
In the Huskers 24-13 win over Missouri the Tigers gained just 97 yards rushing and 220 yards of total offense.
Husker cornerback DeJuan Groce said the meeting was an open discussion amongst the players. "It's something different when you do a meeting with your players. It helps with togetherness, Groce said. "Once we set that in stone that's what we wanted to do and we did it."
The meeting was the first players only meeting for the defense during a season where the squad had been maligned for a pair of weak performances. Nebraska's defense was riddled in losses to Penn State and Iowa State.
"I think it just came down to what we expected of ourselves," said linebacker Scott Shanle. "I think they had ninety some-odd yards rushing at halftime and we were still going for that goal of 100 yards and we met it."
"That's what we decided on as a defense today and that what we did," Shanle said.
