Texas A&M - W 38-31

Horne Of Plenty

by Mark Fricke
October 26, 2002

True freshman I-Back David Horne rushed for 128 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a come-from-behind 38-31 win over Texas A&M.

The win marked the Huskers' first road victory following five straight defeats and kept alive their hopes of salvaging the season and earning a bowl bid.

The Huskers trailed 31-21 going into the fourth quarter. The Huskers were able to get their powerful rushing game in gear and wore down the Aggie defense with a pair of Horne touchdowns and a Josh Brown field goal. A late game rally by A&M fell short when safety Philip Bland intercepted an errant Dustin Long pass in the end zone.

"This was a huge for us to get that streak off our shoulders," Bland said. "I can't tell you how much we needed this." "We overcame an awful lot," Cornhuskers coach Frank Solich said. "So many things happened in the second half. It was an unbelievable half of football."

Nebraska rushed for 381 yards in the game, 248 of those coming in the second half. The Huskers added 118 yards in the air to finish with 497 net yards, but Big Red's third-down conversion success (8-of-16) sustained drives. The Cornhuskers also converted two critical fourth downs in the final quarter.

"I don't care who you play. If you rush for that many yards, you're going to win," Lord said. "It's all about attitude right now. Nobody believes in us. All we had was our heart."

Quarterback Jammal Lord was able to shake off early game errors to rush for 159 yards on 30 carries. Senior I-back Dahrran Diedrick chipped in with 85 yards on 15 carries

Nebraska started the game strong with an impressive 80-yard drive on their opening possession, of those yards came on the ground.. They took a 7-0 lead when I-Back Dahrran Diedrick took the ball in on a 12 yard run.

Husker mistakes marred the rest of the quarter. Texas A&M blocked a Kyle Larson punt and Terrance Thomas scooped up the loose ball and scored from 12 yards out.

A&M took the lead thanks to a fumbled pitch from Lord to Diedrick that gave the Aggies the ball at the NU 6. A 9-yard pass from Long to Joe Webber counted the score.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the second. Horne scored his second TD on a 2-yard run.

Texas A&M seemed to gain the momentum at the start of the second half. Todd Pegram booted a 33-yard fields goal on their opening drive, then disaster struck again for Nebraska. Lord, running an option, was stripped of the ball. The ball popped up into the hands of Byron Jones who sprinted untouched 65 yards for an Aggie touchdown and a 31-14 lead.

Nebraska finally turned the tables late in the third. Horne scored his third touchdown on a 21-yard run to pull the Huskers within 31-21.

The Aggie defense wore down in the final period allowing the Huskers to pound their way to the victory.

"It's greatly disappointing to be in the lead in the fourth quarter and lose," said A&M Head Coach R.C. Slocum. "I was disappointed tonight, but even when we got a pretty good lead, I never felt comfortable in stopping their offense."
