Penn State 18-10

Nebraska Tames The LIons

by Mark Fricke
September 13, 2003

So much for that "new look" offense the Husker coaching staff promised this season. The Huskers apparently didn't need it as they went back to old-fashioned pound-it-out football in their 18-10 win over Penn State.

Nebraska rushed for 337 yards on 72 carries. I-BackJosh Davis rushed for 179 yards on 32 carries, Quarterback Jammal Lord rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries and I-Back David Horne added another 61 yards rushing. All three players each gained more rushing yards than the Nittany Lions gained as an entire team. Penn State covered only 44 yards in the game.

"We knew we had to go out and hammer the ball at them," Davis said.

The ground attack paid its biggest dividends in the third quarter.

Trailing, 10-9, the Cornhuskers rammed the ball right down Penn State's throat by rushing 16 consecutive times, covering 80 yards and taking more than eight minutes off the clock. Lord capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. IT was the only touchdown the Huskers were able to muster, despite travelling inside the Lions' 20-yard line five times earlier.

Nebraska took an early lead in the second period after a pair of David Dykes field goals. Penn State took a 7-6 lead with 10:28 left in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Ricky Upton. The score was set up when Lord was hit by Lavon Chisley and fumbled at the Nebraska 29-yard line.

Dykes added another 41- yard field goal later in the half, but Penn State recovered with a Robbie Gould field goal of their own as time ran out in the first half.

Penn State held a slim 10-9 lead at halftime, but the third quarter scoring drive to open the half by the Huskers changed the momentum for good.

With Nebraska back in the lead, Penn State tried to manufacture a fourth quarter comeback, but came up short.

Quarterback Zack Mills lost a fumbled snap to Huskers linebacker Barrett Ruud at midfield, freshman David Dyches kicked a 32-yard field goal with 3:53 remaining to raise the lead to 18-10. It was the fourth field goal of the game for Dyches.

Penn State's final attempt fell short when Mills misconnected on a pass intended for Tony Johnson on fourth-and-10 from the Nebraska 44.

The Huskers' struggles in the red zone continued a season long struggle for Nebraska. Quarterback Jammal Lord, who felt the sting of crowd-originated boos, shrugged off the concerns.

"It's a win. That's all we really care about is wins right now," Lord said.

The Huskers improved to 3-0 and moved up to 15th in the latest Associated Press rankings.  end of article dingbat
