For the 35th consecutive time the Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the Kansas Jayhawks as they dispatched KU 24-3. The win puts the Huskers back into the driver's seat for the Big XII Championship North title.
The Huskers' win, coupled with a Missouri loss to Colorado earlier in the day, meant the Huskers can claim the division crown by winning their final two contests against Kansas State and Colorado.
Turnovers and penalties sealed the Jayhawks fate throughout the game. Behind freshman quarterback Adam Barmann, the Jayhawks struggled valiantly, but often foun dthemselves victims of their own mistakes.
The Huskers took a 3-0 lead late in the first period on a 28-yard David Dykes field goal. On Kansas' next drive Jarrell Pippens intercepted a Barmann pass at the NU 42 yard line. The Huskers drove the 58 yards in 10 plays to score on a 1-yard run by fullback Steve Kriewald. Nebraska lead 10-0 three minutes into the second period.
Nebraska gave up the ball on their next drive when a deep Jammal Lord pass was intercepted at the KU 22 by Jonathan Lamb. The Jayhawks mixed runs and short passes to charge down to the Nebraska 3. Kansas was forced to try a field goal with five seconds left. Jerod Brooks' first attempt was blocked, but the Huskers were flagged for offsides. The second attempt was good and the half ended with Nebraska clinging to a 10-3 lead.
Kansas was able to execute their game plan in the first half to stay competitive. They controlled the ball for 17:42, over five minutes more than Nebraska.
As the second half opened it seemed as though things would continue to go Kansas' way. They quickly sent Nebraska's offense to the sideline on the opening drive, then marched downfield and appeared to be poised to score. Then a Barmann pass was intercepted by Dan Bullocks at the goal line and returned to the 12.
The Huskers regrouped with the help of three Kansas personal foul penalties on the drive. They marched down inside the five, then self-destructed with a fumble into the end zone that was recovered by Kansas.
Once again Kansas became their own enemy. Josh Bullocks intercepted his nation-best ninth pass of the year at the Nebraska 38. This time the Huskers would finish off the drive with a 3-yard run by Davies.
"Penalties killed us. The turnovers too -- not holding onto the ball," said a frustrated Kansas head coach Mike Mangino.
Nebraska scored again on their next possession. Aided by a 20 yard pass to Isaiah Fluellen to the 3, Nebraska scored again with Davies' second touchdown from three-yards out.
Corey Ross became the Huskers "go-to" guy late in the game. Entering in the second half, Ross rushed for a game leading 114 yards on 19 carries.
Jammal Lord completed 7 of 13 passes for 110 yards and rushed for 86. Both players out-rushed the entire Kansas team, who recorded 86 yards on the ground.
"I was having fun today. Last week I didn’t have a lot of fun, and I didn’t want to go two games without having fun," Lord said.
Barmann completed 25 of 36 passes for 207 yards. Charles Gordon was the Jayhawks leading rusher with 48 yards.
