Buffaloes Get Trashed By Huskers

Nebraska Dominates Colorado 30-3

by Mark Fricke
November 25, 2005

The Colorado players talked trash. The Colorado fans threw trash. But in the end it was the Nebraska Cornhuskers who did the trashing on the field.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers turned in their finest performance of the season as they dominated the Colorado Buffaloes in every facet of the game and finished off a 7-4 regular season with a 30-3 win over the Buffaloes. The game was marred in the fourth quarter when unruly fans hurled debris onto the field, leading to an unprecedented ejection of an entire section of fans from the stadium.

The ugliness wasn't limited to just the stands. During pre-game warmups the Colorado team confronted the Huskers at midfield and began taunting them.

"It was ready to turn into a melee," said Husker head coach Bill Callahan who credited his players with keeping their tempers in check. "There's no plce for that in college football."

The loss was Colorado’s first at home this season and represented was the fewest points the Huskers had given up to the Buffaloes since a shutout win in 1988. The Blackshirt defense sacked Buff quarterback Joel Klatt five times in the game.

"What better way than today to put it all together. A performance like this on the road, against a division leader, one that is 5-0 at home, is huge," Callahan said.

Husker quarterback Zac Taylor threw for 392 yards, second most ever by a Husker player. He completed 27 of 43 passes with two touchdowns. The Huskers amassed 529 yards of total offense, Colorado managed just 212 total yards. Running back Corey Ross set a new team position record with 129 receiving yards on nine catches.

After a Colorado field goal on their opening drive, the game was all Huskers. Nebraska scored 20 unanswered points in the first half, then added another 7 in the third period. In the fourth quarter Nebraska went into pure shutdown mode. The Huskers held the ball for nearly twelve-and-a-half minutes and allowed CU only fifteen snaps in the final stanza.

The Buffaloes marched quickly on their initial drive of the game. Hugh Charles broke loose for a 45-yard gain down to the Husker 24-yard line on CU’s first snap. The Blackshirts stiffened their and Colorado had to settle for a 33-yard Mason Crosby field goal. The Huskers matched the score with a 26-yard field goal by Jordan Congdon on the ensuing drive.

The defense continued to dominate on the Buffs second drive, forcing a missed 57-yard field goal attempt by Crosby.

Nebraska benefited from excellent field position throughout the game. As the second quarter opened Nebraska capped an 8 play 54-yard drive with a 19-yard pass from Taylor to Ross for a touchdown. The Huskers led 10-3 with 13:01 left in the period.

After forcing another 3-and-out, Nebraska’s offense charged again. With the help of a CU personal foul on a third-and-ten play that kept the drive alive, Taylor connected with Todd Peterson on a 38-yard pass to the CU 9 yard line. Two plays later Cody Glenn charged in for a two-yard touchdown run.

Taylor’s hot hand continued on the next Husker drive. With completions of 25-yards to Cory Ross and a 35-yard toss to Franz Hardy, Nebraska set up a 30-yard Congdon field goal to make the score 20-3 at the half.

Nebraska almost added to their total before the half. After a Adam Ickes pass interception gave the Huskers the ball back at midfield with under a minute left the Huskers slipped down to the two yard line on a 32-yard pass to Grant Mulkey. With two seconds on the clock and no time outs, Taylor tried to spike the ball to kill the clock, but time wound down leaving the Huskers up 17 at the half.

After the break, Colorado first two drives of the half yielded just 13 total yards. Nebraska’s offense got back into their rhythm on their second drive. Taylor hit Ross for a 26-yard pass, another 10-yard strike to Terrence Nunn and finished things with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nate Swift to lift NU to 27-3. The score held up through the third period.

Then things turned ugly. Not on the field, but in the stands.

Fans in the student section in the southeast corner of the stadium began tossing debris onto the field, causing a halt in action. Officials ordered two entire sections of fans to be cleared before play would resume. Colorado officials said that section of the stadium was under video surveillance and prosecution was a possibility for the offenders.

The fourth quarter was an exercise in patience for the Huskers. Their opening drive of the period consumed eight-and-a-half minutes before stalling on a missed Congdon field goal. After Colorado went three-and-out. Nebraska ticked off another 4:14 off the clock. Congdon capped that drive with a 32-yard field goal for a 30-3 lead. Colorado’s last gasp ended as time ran out.

Nate Swift finished the game with four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Marlon Lucky rushed 10 times for 33 yards to pace the Huskers on the ground, which rung up 105 yards against the nation's top-ranked run defense.

“It’s unbelievable. This is finally the game that we have been working towards. We had a good game all around, start to finish. It just makes it even better that it was at Colorado. It ruined a lot of their opportunities. That was a great feeling,” said Zac Taylor.

Defensively, Nebraska harrased Klatt into a 20-for-40 day and only 159 yards. The Blackshirts also recorded four sacks and surrendered just 53 yards on the ground. Ickes, Bo Ruud and Daniel Bullocks each made six tackles for NU.

Nebraska now awaits its bowl game destination that is expected to be announced December 5th.  end of article dingbat
